It will prevent you from doing a lot of the things that will get the NSA interested in you?
Imagine trying to brute force a password on a Dell.

It didn’t occur to me that the people in the graphic might be women. 😆
Respecting people is way more important than “getting” a meme, so your head’s in the right place, regardless.

That is incredibly interesting. Thanks for going down the rabbit hole.
It’s truly shocking how much trouble companies go through to surreptitiously track us.

Good ol’ Murphy. The Hammurabi of the internet.
I’m not sure how to explain the concept of walled gardens to people who grew up with four websites. In the 90s, most software was “shareware”, you could try it out for as long as you wanted, but businesses were expected to buy licenses.
MS used it’s dominant operating system to drive web browser competitors out of business. This is illegal. The whole concept of capitalism is built around competition, but MS used it’s power to stifle ’ innovation. The Clinton administration beat MS in court, then the Bush Administration dropped the case before the appeal was heard. If they hadn’t done that, instead had broken up Google, Meta, Apple, and the lot of them, the world would be a lot different now.
MS abused its monopoly in the 90s. The Clinton administration was too lenient, then the Bush admin kowtowed completely. Now, there’s largely no chance for another operating system to compete.
I’m a noob, and I thought Bazzite would be simpler, but when I had an issue (monitor going black under heavy load), I couldn’t solve the problem because of the immutable OS. I went around in circles with Google and ChatGPT, and couldn’t get it to work.
I respect cis people’s right to wear whatever they want…but if I see striped thigh high socks, I will continue to make assumptions until told otherwise.
The number of trans people is very small. Only a small percentage of people who work in tech are trans. But a relatively huge percentage of trans people work in tech.

Transness and Software development are both correlated to neurodiversity. (I am a neurodivergent trans developer, ftr)
I haven’t especially heard the Linux or Rust stereotype, but it’s fair enough for a funny joke.

Humming seems a bit odd. I wonder if those people are just humming to themselves.
I’ll do things like scuffing my feet, jingling my keys, or pretending to talk on my phone. I am a large guy and I naturally walk very quietly. I have scared quite a few women, and honestly, it is unpleasant for both of us.

In the US we call that the National Guard. The state governor controls them. In no way are they for this sort of situation though.
I don’t care what the dictionary says. I’m telling you what every American means when they say “militia”: crazy fringe conspiracy theorists who spend a lot of time discussing “the Jew problem”.

Your fundamental misunderstanding is that “militia” is a euphemism for “right wing domestic terrorist organization”. You won’t find them on Lemmy. There are a few small armed leftist organizations, but they wouldn’t call themselves militias and their mission is defending their communities. They understand that our government has always been tyrannical and a few guys with guns will just get themselves killed.
Don’t believe right wingers. (You can be forgiven for not knowing these were fringe right wing idiots. Media coverage tends to obscure that part.) They say they’re against government tyranny, but really they just hate brown people. (They meant the “tyranny” of having to sit at the same lunch counter as [slurs].) They love what is going on now.

I think 10% of people believe nearly anything. It’s basically the rounding error for a survey.
Honestly, if you had asked me 10 minutes ago “Is MacOS based on Linux?” I would have gotten it wrong. But if you asked “Is MacOS based on UNIX or Linux?” I would have gotten it right.
Having two different realities is not good. I’m not sure what is to be done about it though. Some people will always choose to believe the easy lie over the difficult truth.
Ignoring Fox and the crazies for a moment, how often have mainstream networks given equal time to climate change deniers and actual scientists, pretending there was a debate where there wasn’t one.
I want to push back a little on “we all agreed on what was and what was not reality.” When there were three TV stations, did any of them highlight police brutality? Overincarceration? The military industrial complex? Anything that would hurt their sponsor’s bottom lines?
The news networks we have today are all owned by large media conglomerates. They range from pro-corporate to pro-fascist. I’m glad that there are enough independent voices that we can hear from people who don’t profit off of the status quo. It’s unfortunate that right wing media is so prevalent and well funded, but if there is an answer to that, it’s not going back to the days when Walter Cronkite, CBS, and Gulf+Western would tell us “That’s the way it is”.

It is more difficult than a few years ago, especially if you don’t want to get sued or get a threatening letter from your ISP.
I would only torrent with a VPN and a private tracker. It’s certainly not difficult to learn, but absolutely requires some small amount of information to acquire.
Frankly, I think the people with more to hide are more virtuous than I. Labor organizers, activists, etc. If you’re working to overthrow my country, awesome. Best of luck to you.
But it’s also fair to say most of us will not truly benefit from writing a custom boot loader and after a certain point this is just a hobby.
