Real Linux is definitely the way - but GSI Roms are totally capable of microG if I’m not mistaken! On that github’s FAQ page it mentions the FLOSS version comes packed with f-droid; microG can be installed from there and works fine - it doesnt need to be bundled in the ROM! 🙂

Or just stick with the vanilla gsi & you’ve got bare aosp. Throw F-droid on there, pull down microG and bam!

More info= works kinda like torrents - your client’s IP & connectivity info is encrypted, then distributed across their ‘hyperDHT’. Users you’ve connected with can ping the DHT to get your current IP info, then you establish a direct connection to whoever you’re chatting! File shares are also accomplished over that DHT, so you can send files of any size, even terabytes!

There’s a lineagoOS fork that comes prepackages with microG as well, helping to keep google services style stuff working (maps links etc) without using any actual google services. It’s my daily driver, would recommend!

YMMV - some stuff still flat out doesn’t work if it’s too reliant on google services. Graphene is definitely better in that regard, if you have a pixel.

There was a post recently on c/privacy for a self hostable (relaying) peer-to-peer web based option! Its effectively release 1.0 and has some bugs (some serious security ones at the moment), but I think it has lots of promise!!
