Is the browse anonymously supposed to work or is this for people who already have a Spotify account?

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Google Photos app uploaded all my locally saved pictures completely against my willEnglish
7·8 months agoI appreciate your comment, replying here for reference, perhaps I’d like to join that signal channel. Being staunchly anti-google I feel I’m on top of things, but my Gmail is used across many of my logins. With the scanning for CSAM issue, many people don’t realize that Google installs a hidden app called safetycore, for me it gets reinstalled on every update.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Youtube Embedded player acting weird for anyone else?English
3·10 months agoThis has been happening all weekend, I use a vpn and often change servers to get something to play. But refreshing with patience and at times shutting down freetube then restarting has helped. It has been a huge pain lately for sure.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Never found a better plugin - chameleonEnglish
1·11 months agoPoint taken, I like the idea of the plugin but was just looking at the permissions and surmising that it was the reason for the downvotes.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Never found a better plugin - chameleonEnglish
5·11 months agoI edited my comment here, but the privacy concern with Chameleon stems from its ability to access and modify data on all websites. This access is necessary for the extension to function, as it needs to alter the user agent and other browser settings. Obviously not great when on secure websites.

2·11 months agoCan someone explain why all the downvotes? I’ve always been of the opinion that the more plugins you have, the more identifiable you are, so if that is the reason for the downvotes, I’d understand.
Edit: It seems the extension requires access to all websites, which allows it to monitor and modify data from any visited site

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Looking for Privacy-Oriented Open-Source Android BrowsersEnglish
2·11 months agoIt’s complicated but F-Droid flags software that may have parts in it that are not entirely free, fennec is a fork of Firefox and within the source code F-Droid is finding that there is something that isn’t totally foss. I suggest using obtainium ( look for it in F-Droid) and find the GitHub version of fennec.

41·11 months agoJust use F-droid and search for Fennec browser there. Or my preferred way is using Obtainium and manually searching for the version on GitHub, latest right now is 139.0.4

10·11 months agoAlso, I have found that if the article is literally within hours of age or to the day, it won’t be archived.
Amazing, got to check this out, thanks for the post. ≖‿≖
I’ve been trying out Searx search lately and preferred it over Qwant. From some quick research, I found that Qwant does not track your search history or create personal profiles based on your searches. Seems like good news meaning users can expect a certain level of anonymity while searching online.
However, and this is why I avoid it, it’s worth noting that Qwant does share some data with Microsoft, particularly regarding ads and search results. This includes sharing your IP address and browser details for fraud detection purposes. Personally, sharing IP information with Microsoft isn’t something I’d want in a search engine, as it raises concerns about how much user data is still being shared despite their claims of anonymization.

3·1 year agoThanks for the heads up. I signed up for Futo Chat on Zulip and realized I didn’t mention the problem was on my desktop client (MacOS). However, through your link, I found the update for Android. I’m happy with it, so cheers for that. For those interested, the Grayjay announcement on the 17th was: “Hey everyone, we’ve been aware of playback issues for YouTube and have been working hard to fix them. This fix is now released on the stable channel (and requires an app update). We are aware that age-restricted, controversial videos, or other videos requiring login may not yet work.” We will work on this next week. The desktop release required for this fix will also be available next week. Here is the change log for the new mobile version 281:"
Edit: getting a UMP redirect fail issue on Android and can’t play YT. When turning off my VPN, it seems to have fixed the issue. (perhaps temporarily)

24·1 year agoHey, I paid for a Proton Unlimited package for the second year. After hearing that Proton CEO Andy Yen voiced support for the U.S. Republican Party, I wondered about the company’s direction. However, there isn’t clear evidence that a Trump administration would be anti-privacy or worse than the Democrats regarding privacy in the U.S. I chose the company because Proton AG is headquartered in Plan-les-Ouates, Switzerland, where its data centers are also located. Additionally, I selected the EU model when purchasing. They have over 110 servers and seem fairly fast compared to my experience with NordVPN over the years. Sadly, in the YouTube field, most of these IP addresses across its global servers have been flagged, and I’m pretty sure I can’t even post this reply on lemmy.world without pausing my VPN.

7·1 year agoGrayjay is great and I look forward to some bug fixes in the next updates. Unfortunately, I also get YT blocking errors mostly when using a VPN (Proton). A side note, for some reason I can’t paste links into the search bar, this kind of throws my game off when switching from Freetube or other YT links.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Are there any working instances of Invidious left?English
8·1 year agoI’ve been trying for weeks. Sometimes, using a random IP address with Proton VPN works for a few hours, but eventually, Freetube (or YouTube) seems to catch on and shuts me down. Gravitywell mentioned a piped instance, which was great but only worked for a minute or two for me. I think the days of being anonymous on YouTube are over—time to move on if privacy is important to you.
Hey thanks for the reply, just been looking into it but wasn’t sure how to go about installing homebrew. I’m actually going about it now. Do I need to do a fresh install of Librewolf first, type the script in the terminal and I’m good to go?

Is there something wrong with Standard Notes that I should be aware of? It hasn’t been mentioned here. It has the AES-256 encryption standard, there is a free tier, it’s open source and it undergoes regular security audits.
