Unlike Whatsapp, Signal doesn’t store your network of contacts. They have your phone number, time of registration, and time of last connect to their servers. They go to great lengths to keep the rest private. In Signal’s case, I don’t see an issue at all, but I do see all the benefit.

For starters, it’s open source. And I’m not too into the details, but the creator of Anubis even mentioned that they were interested in creating a non-javascript version for privacy.
Google’s reCaptcha, to which Anubis is being compared to by OP, is obviously far less private. It’s just another mechanism of control and data harvesting for Google. One of the ways that they determine if you’re malicious/human or not is to check if you have a Google cookie in your browser and are signed in. Not to mention fingerprinting (hardware and software info), browsing data, AI training ironically enough (the fucking streetlights), etc etc.
Anubis is relevant here because it is more private, among other things.

39·9 months agoThey’re killing third-party client access, limiting adblockers, blocking VPNs, and forcing sign in more and more. I sincerely hate it but this was inevitable. They have their monopoly, this is just the “abuse that position and enshittify for more data and money” stage. I hope an alternative takes off because I refuse to play by their rules.

Now Curtis Yarven and his circle of authoritarian tech bro freaks and 5 corpos in a trench coat are running America. Then the UK gets Apple to remove ADP and now, a nation that already has a hard-on for security cameras decides to expand biometric surveillance in quick succession. Hmm… interesting.

At risk of going slightly off topic, trans people aren’t an -ism. It’s not an ideology, though transphobes love to frame it that way (not saying you are).
I really hope this gets a proper foss “for you” algo. Personalized content and people discovery features are lacking on the fediverse.
Why not just disable the Ubuntu pro ads in the mean time?

Fediverse@lemmy.world•What made everyone move to Bluesky or Threads instead of Mastodon?English
14·1 year agoI’m only on the fediverse but I miss algorithms. Recommended accounts (which to be fair exists on a corner of Mastodon), similar accounts to one you just followed, custom home feed, suggested posts, etc. Discoverability sucks on fedi and the lack of interest from devs for some sort of private FOSS implementation is disappointing.
Loops was like let’s have a “For You” algo early this year but even that seems to be a dead idea.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Signal Is More Than Encrypted Messaging. Under Meredith Whittaker, It’s Out to Prove Surveillance Capitalism Wrong
64·1 year agoThere is no metadata harvesting on Signal and the use of a phone number is so convenient and helped massively with adoption from the general unaware public.
I loved that it acted as a private and secure drop in replacement for SMS (particularly before they removed that integration) that does what I needed and does it very well and easily connects me with people that already have my number. This made sharing Signal very easy. The only data Signal has to even provide to the authorities is your registration date, phone number, and time of last connection. The absolute minimum. It’s fantastic. If you compare this to Whatsapp which has everything but the exact content of your messages, it’s not even a contest.
For myself on Signal and everyone else I’ve known that that uses Whatsapp or Insta or whatever, the extra absolute anonymity of also removing phone numbers from the already small equation just isn’t needed or worth it, otherwise you wouldn’t be using Signal, let alone fucking Facebook.
