Yeah I’ve been using Linux for a very long time. The amount of time I’ve spent on the case being incorrect is non-trivial. I’ve gotten better at not screwing it up throughout the years but the sum of advantages is far outweighed by the sum of debugging time spent.
It sucked when Crashplan’s home client went under. If you installed the client on two computers with internet access, it would let you set the remote computer as a target. Encryption was done at the source, it had dedupe, versioning. It ate a little ram but it was really nice.

I know there is logic and mapping of where everything’s supposed to be in theory but in practice s***'s kind of all over the place.
It’s easier to manage security that way.
Instead of having one binary folder full of stuff that’s intended to be run with privilege access and non-privilege access, all the privileged stuff goes in sbin and you don’t even see it in your path as a regular user. It also means that access rights can be controlled at the folder level instead of the individual file level.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the map, The 2/3 of the names on there don’t really do the subject of the communities justice.
Sure it’s getting cheaper, but is it getting cheaper faster than their need for it?
I’ve always expected their business model was unsustainable probably only able to manage through venture capital and growth.
There’s hardly even any competition, their free product is substantial. Even fully funding a server is barely enough to cover a bare metal node.
This is just the introduction to cost savings. As they wade into market saturation, and still need to provide growth in numbers they’ll need to pinch the free users into paying and pinch the paying users into paying enough to fully fund the service. Of course it won’t stop there…

I’m not against Rust. I’d like to see something less dangerous with memory than C, but I don’t think it’s time yet for the kernel to leave C.
It’s pretty clean, stable, it’s working well at the moment and the C language (or variants of it) is/are still actively used everywhere. I think the kernel universally going Rust will be a long road of everything under the sun going there first before it’s ported in earnest.

Happened at a previous company for me too. They were paying people with their own 401k’s for quite some time before they went under. Some of my coworkers were putting in max contributions.
No one ever saw any of that money back. The management just rolled into a new venture like nothing happened. There were tons of lawsuits but they had all their money hidden away.
I didn’t hide it. I said hey, I oopsed that!
We could still scale at a reasonable pace but they more or less made it unnecessary in about a month.
I’m using NixOS, it’s really freaking awesome and super repeatable but it’s also like smashing myself in the face with a brick every time I want to do something slightly unusual.

Used to work for a gaming company that had a really big Facebook presence.
When most companies launched a new game they would just launch the game connect to Facebook and call it a day.
But when we launched a new game we would turn on cross-promotion and send millions of users to the new game day one.
The problem is that Facebooks load balancers don’t scale quickly. And if you start sending millions of people to a game that just errors, it’s pretty bad for marketing.
So we had a script that you would run for an hour before you went to launch a game that would start making hundreds then thousands than tens of thousands of connections to Facebook giving their load balancers time to scale.
Well, I didn’t write the tool I was just given it and the documentation on it was kind of sparse at the time. I started with the value of 30,000. Weeeellll, turns out a sane value would have been 3-5 as it multiplied whatever input you gave it by 10K.
My cluster made sweet love with their cluster, and Facebook went down for about 3 hours.
Within a week they had some pretty decent changes to their new API limit subsystem.

I do the same all the time with anytype.
I dropped notes into sublime and then go back and put them neatly into any type. I don’t really know why I do it either It takes any type a total of three or four seconds to start up and I have to enter in a passcode. But I only have to do it once. I guess I do have to think about where I’m going to put the document and making sure that it’s tagged correctly, it’s a lot easier just a scribble something into a random text window to forget about for a decade.
I’ve run both. Started with Gnome.
I didn’t absolutely love the UI but it wasn’t bad.
Installed a bunch of plugins poked it product tweaked it. Made it exactly what I wanted.
One time I tried KDE and found that it was exactly what I was turning gnome into with all the plugins.
Admittedly, I think the Gnome control panels and tools are nicer.
