I haven’t used Facebook in 10 years. When do I get my democracy back?

How cute. You think we have other options?
We don’t.
America hasn’t gone insane, our democracy has been hacked
We are not ok with any of this at an insane level of unity… More than we’ve had for anything in my lifetime. Congress members are resigning right now in the hopes of saving their careers
We’re up against the full weight of the global 1%. They’re trying to hollow out our county and leave it as a playground for billionaires
They own the media, the administration, the highest court, and to some extent our law making bodies
This is a disease. It’s coming for everyone if it isn’t stopped

2·2 months agoHe really wasn’t. He had been out of the writing process for multiple seasons, they had him recording off site
The cracks have been showing for years now, I won’t deny he has an energy to his voice acting, but the replacements are fine. The problem is the writing

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why aren't more people re-examining past conspiracies as trust in mainstream media declines over Gaza coverage?English
15·2 months agoNo, humans can’t, scholars can. Most humans could learn historical materialism to the level they could pass a course on it, but the vast majority can’t apply this type of analytical lens in practice.
It’s a matter of disposition, the ability to look at a situation from multiple angles and question your beliefs about it isn’t something that can be taught, only learned. You can walk someone through it step by step over and over, even train them to go through a process when prompted, but without a certain disposition they’ll never actually use this ability without promoting

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•You have complete control over your franchise of choice, what are you retconning?English
6·2 months agoIronically, that would probably end up with a different season of slop
The writers haven’t been subtle, though the episodes they’ve been directly saying they don’t know what people want from them and they keep getting told to be more like season 1
Well, we got something like season 1. The characters undid their character development and the episodes are aimless riffs off of classic sci-fi and cosmic horror
I think I’d just get the writing staff off of social media and pay them to hang out in a comfy room until they have an idea they’re excited about again

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why aren't more people re-examining past conspiracies as trust in mainstream media declines over Gaza coverage?English
33·2 months agoBecause that’s not how people think. Not anyone.
You can study history, and if you do it right you’ll see how stupid and individually directed most things are. It’s all conspiracies, that’s how the world has worked for millennia
One realization doesn’t free your mind and make you a scholar… That’s just not how humans work

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•When they tell you at work or at school to give it your all, do they mean to do something until you burn out or collapse of exhaustion? Because that seems to be the trope in all movies and shows.English
8·2 months agoPretty much. It means give maximum output, which can easily be over 100%.
And that means burn out

2·2 months agoIt’s basically just burning through the credit they’ve paid Google and making their numbers look like the ad was effective, but conversion was low
Google has been caught doing similar things to make their metrics look better
This does hurt advertising in a nebulous kind of accelerationist way, but it does end up with more ad money being given to Google

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is there is any selective/professional link aggregator?English
2·4 months agoYou ask on a link aggregator…
No, no there’s not. The Internet is dying, the best you’re going to get is human made submissions
You could put yourself on some mailing lists, otherwise a well curated set of communities is about as good as it gets
I think the concept is good, that’s literally the design our government was created for. United States. We don’t have provinces, we have states
It’s going to be a huge mess, but I think that’s the most likely path

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you think of imitation and lab-grown meats?English
121·5 months agoImitation meat is very highly processed food. I’ve never had lab grown meat, I’d need to know the details to judge it
I do like me a good bean burger though…I make big batches of dried beans and mash them, it’s great on rice, as a dip, you can fry it, you can add whatever you want to make infinite variations
But every once in a while I like to have a good burger. Like a few times a year… Honestly, if anything, meat tastes better because I rarely eat it.
Imitation stuff just doesn’t compare, maybe you could convince me it’s meat, but you’ll never convince me it’s better than “ok”. And plenty of meat is just ok… Most of it even
I’d rather eat my beans every day, and eat my steak and tuna a few times a year and enjoy every moment of it

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Where do I start with networking?English
1·5 months agoYou could mount it on top or vertically behind the rack and have it still look decent and be functional with a little handiwork
You still are going to need a router, although you don’t need a fancy router and a fancy switch, you just have to make sure you’re not bottlenecked and have to design things differently
2.5 gb is probably more than enough, but you could probably get away with 1 gb if you aren’t doing a lot of file transfers - if it’s just backups and streaming video, if you want to get fancy it might become a bottleneck.
PoE is kinda niche so unless you have specific plans to use it, it probably won’t come up
The switch supports vlans, so you could get fancy with a VPN gateway and access these things remotely with a Virtual DMZ, but realistically that’s a bitch to set up and you could just make a real DMZ with a router/wifi access point combo. Or just forget the DMZ and have a VPN gateway that connects to the local network
I really just don’t know enough about how you want to use this to get more specific. This is probably more switch than you need, but if you’re not connecting from outside it’ll probably work great for the LAN
Networking is all about bottlenecks, and I doubt this will be a bottleneck for a good while

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Where do I start with networking?English
41·5 months agoI’m not sure what you’re asking
In your position, I would want a VPN. I like wire guard, it’s pretty simple compared to other options… But just comparatively
If you want to do networking to network, I can suggest all sorts of things… None of them is practical for normal use cases, but some are pretty neat

The people working on the Israel projects are probably going to be on board with what they’re doing, so I guess you could sabotage Windows a little?
I mean honestly, with how many bugs are coming up in all the windows products, maybe this is happening. I figured it was just years of layoffs, but maybe some of it is intentional

11·6 months agoIDK. Honestly, I really don’t know. I don’t bend or break, I just put one foot in front of the other, so maybe I keep chasing the remaining communities deeper and deeper?
But at some point, I think I just become a monk. If I can no longer learn through technology, I’ll be forced to only look inwards. I think I leave everything behind and just start walking… I’ve had the urge all my life, but the comfort always called me back eventually
Yes. Everything is monitored, and it sucks. We’ve internalized it even, you can’t so much as have a hobby without dumping money into it to signal you take it seriously
