I paid for it ages ago on a deal, and it currently suits my needs. It runs as a docker container and it just works. It’s easy enough for my elderly mom to use remotely and I’ve ripped my entire movie collection for her to watch. I also like the live tv that’s included with the pass.
I would switch in a heartbeat if it wasn’t doing what I need, but so far I have no complaints, it works well for my family’s needs.

Following in my dad’s footsteps.

It takes a bit of time to find the right distro and that is the biggest obstacle to linux imo.
It’s also the greatest benefit. Vanilla stuff works out of the box for most, but once you need more, there’s a paved runway headed in any direction you want to go (some in better shape than others to be fair).
Windows and OS X are certainly wider runways, but there are cliffs off the side of you want to change direction.
Good things usually take time, but you will know where you are when you get there.

Palantir is hungry.

This, it’s purely moralistic fart sniffing. That and folks who can’t control themselves and blame the performers for being too tempting.
Right, I run almost the same stack as this guy, but on a dumpster dive office PC turned into my NAS, and three used, micro form factor pc’s I picked up for 60 bucks. My most expensive thing is the hot swap silverstone case for the refurb 4 and 10tb hdds.
Also, why pfsense when opnsense exists (j/k, just my preference).

It is, but it also sucks that it is. I don’t know why people continue to have such blind spots, but given who and what is behind bluesky, why would anyone, ever think it was ever going to be open or anything but twitter 2.0?
I’m really baffled at why people are so unwilling to learn from history.

Jebus, fantastic.

Oh no, what rumblings would that be? Prusa has always been a ray of hope…

was having that exact conversation with a buddy yesterday, he figures we’ll see the first attempt this year.
I personally don’t think you can have a romantic relationship with a thing you created. romance is about discovering, learning and growing with someone else. When that else is a manifestation of yourself, it’s ultimately masturbation.

I love it when a brief comment just strips all the arguments to their core. This is exactly it. I’d say he was looking for a companion, but folks don’t create companions to be equals, they create them to control them.
This is just a really fancy, incredibly power hungry sextoy, isn’t it?

Good advice, thanks.

It’s a lot of fun, but not an internet replacement yet. They did just come out with a new dual band that has enough bandwidth to do something useful. Can’t wait to give it a try.
Still very worth setting up. I have a node that runs in my attic, and a few that I can take around with me. I can get good single most anywhere in my neighborhood, and I have enough nodes nearby that I can pretty much communicate with people all over the metro area (I’m in the twin cities).
It is the way.
++ Came here to say this.

I figure by then, it will all be part of some AI training set one day. Hopefully my shitty writing and bad opinions poison the shit out of it.
I’m sure it works great but it’s like curing a toothache by breaking another one out on the other side of your mouth. My problem with windows isn’t how difficult to use it is, it’s how restricted and how connected it must be. I don’t have full control of the system and I’m required to have external accounts for it to work. Same with chrome.
My data is mine, I don’t want it accessed, owned and controlled by a faceless internet corporation.
So, professionally I do not care what system I am expected to use, they are all functional. If the person signing my paycheck is comfortable with it, so be it (in fact, I’m a big proponent of externalizing risk in a corporate setting). Personally though, I’ll keep up my greybeard routine :).
Big fan. I don’t demand much from a window manager, just stay out of the way. I’ve never really had to give cinnamon any thought, shit just works. I spend most of my time in a terminal window though, so not really pushing the GUI.
Yes and no, I only buy refurbs these days, so long as they work out of the box, they have been far more reliable than retail drives from a box store.
Definitely higher incidents of DOA drives, but the ones that work, have been pretty solid.
Still don’t trust spinning rust, so in addition to dual parity raid, I also have a full backup copy. But I no longer have reservations about refurb drives…
