Linux@lemmy.ml•Can we possibly do without apps on PCs ?English
1·15 days agoIf by “apps” you mean applications, no, not really. If by “apps” you mean pre-compiled binaries of applications downloaded from a central repository, yes.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Alternative to KDE-Connect?English
0·19 days agoI know this doesn’t answer your question, but the days of separating KDE and Gnome software are gone. You can run whatever on pretty much any desktop. So if you find a Gnome-specific application that does what you need, just run it. The megabytes of dependencies it will bring in aren’t that big of a deal nowadays, considering we have terabyte-scale hard drives now.

Linux@lemmy.ml•I must have died and gone to heaven [nushell]English
10·2 months agoI’ve had nushell as my daily driver for a couple years now and I love it. “Made for actual humans to use” is exactly the description I’d give.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you think of imitation and lab-grown meats?English
6·3 months agoI feel like Impossible nails it with their nuggets. The patties, not so much. Morningstar does a remarkable job for franks and corn dogs, but again, not patties. The best patties I’ve found so far is Beyond Meat.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•ICE acquires Israeli spyware capable of hacking phones and encrypted appsEnglish
52·3 months agoDoes that work, though? It’s just a modified AOSP, so it might have the same issues as vanilla android.

1·3 months agoOh! I completely missed your point. Yes, use cash or barter, certainly don’t continue to promote capitalist hegemony.

1·3 months agoIt doesn’t, and that’s a good point. A lot of supposed “leftists” are really just sitting around waiting for it to happen, without realizing it takes all of us joining an org and doing some shit about the injustice around us.

4·3 months agoBUT if/when you have money to spare invest them into creators/art that bring you something. It seems antithetical because they taught us real art should be free from capitalism’s shackles yadda yadda, but art and artists needs money to flourish. Find indie artists and wacky projects and fund them.
This is an excellent point and it bears repeating. Indie artists deserve to eat, and unfortunately we’re currently stuck in a capitalist hell hole. So until that system is demolished, throw them some coin for their work.

121·3 months agoRegardless of what conclusion you develop, some things are always morally acceptable to pirate. For example, Metallica.

On a serious note, IP is a made up concept. Pirate away.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Is BOINC safe to run on your personal computer/server with your private files?English
2·3 months agoIn the past, no, there have been remote exploits done through BOINC. But I haven’t been an active participant in over a decade, so I don’t know what their security is like now.

Matlab is also awful about licensing. I took a Matlab class in college and we used gnu octave instead of the real thing. Works just as good, it’s just slightly different syntax.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Does an Amber alert get sent to every phone in a region, including the target?English
8·3 months agoI would assume so; they don’t necessarily know the abductors phone number, just the vehicle, right? So, it would be difficult to single out that one phone.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Most people seem to assume fire alarms are false alarms. Is that how it's always worked? What can be done about it?English
9·3 months agoProbably because experience has taught them that. How many actual building fires have you been in, and how many fire alarms have you evacuated for? For me, 100% of the fire alarms I’ve evacuated for have either been a false alarm or a test.
