I mean I did an email transfer as a multihat guy at a small business and mx records are a bitch. granted more so because there needs to be no loss or delay. might be easier for an individual. but I don’t roll my own.

2·10 days agoThats a good idea. It might even be able to be contactless. Then like you have a wire coming off the plate part in the wall and you just need a plug nearby.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Ideas for self hosted door bellEnglish
11·10 days agoThis is off topic but sometimes I am sorta annoid that the standard for a doot is lock in door and hole in wall. I feel if the setup had the lock in the wall then it could be wired into the electric and you would not need batteries or such for an electric one. Maybe a recharchable one so it would work for awhile in a power outage.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•An honest discussion in the current state of the FediverseEnglish
4·10 days agoSo there seems to be people who want the fediverse to grow a lot and surpass corpo social media and become the dominant thing. I get that. For myself I experience the time when the internet was all command line and most of the users were in universities or army bases. Home users were more likely to be on prodigy than aol. One thing I like about the fediverse is its niche community of gnu/libre type folks. The other is the control I have to block domains, instances, community, and users. so if it becomes dominant I can still keep it the way I want it. Anyway I don’t think many fediverse folks are especially concerned about it growing and some like myself and a little more negative about it. Not really negative but I think ambivalent is the best word for it.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•What would be your opinion on a lemmy/piefed instance that's run like Athen democracy?English
2·23 days agoOh wow. I always though it was everyone. This is even a bit more concerning to me because its like the pool is people who want to do it but not to the extent to like make and nurture a community. I mean in some ways the fediverse is the ultimate democracy as anyone can make their own instance or community. As long as they are willing to put in the time they can do it.

4·23 days agoI would not join. This type of thing is nice a laugh but I don’t have the time to do the work. So Im a leech on the hard work of others. I hope those others understand my life situation that has me leeching but I get others have even more challenging situations. Oh wait. Who apply. Not everyone? that is not athenian democracy is it?

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Proof of AI-assisted political profiling by Unruffled @ lemmy.dbzer0.comEnglish
51·1 month agoMeh. As I always say I just want the ability to block instances as and either or for communities and users. if dbzer0 bans me I want to be able to block the communites (mods/admins to me) without blocking the relatively innocent (possibly) users. although wow. looking at it that is pretty creepy in a way. Its kinda funny as it might be one of the bigger issues (israels treatment of palestine) around if it were not for the state of my own country.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•For those who have tried MBin, is it a good Lemmy alternative?English
15·1 month agoI liked kbin a lot because earnest was pretty prolific with improvements. mbin felt a bit like maintenance mode. I went to piefed because it seemed to be very active with improved tools for the user and such.
this one did not name any instances. paranoia is the only reason to link them or knowldge that the two things are indeed connected. Each is fine to me though. Bringing up data and slicing and dicing it a bit is fine and the convo brought up issues with the way it was massaged. Similarly this is about a particular thing. Niether indicated an opinion or want for some sort of action against instances. so yeah. unrelated. but yeah I like good and vibrant convo which is why I have enjoyed both posts. one thing im not wild about this is some comments suggest its an admin thing and should be discussed in some admin community but im not wild about the cigar filled room type thing.
im just saying when there is a particular thing and someone starts pulling in something unrelated as a conspiracy it leaves a bad taste. Its a bit like folks suddenly saying something about lemmy.ml being so and so in an unrelated type post that gets me to do my posting in their communities but in a reverse kinda way. rimus last post about a trend he saw I think it had some interesting perspectives and few if any where that the instances were ban happy. Similarly this one has some good conversations going.
this gets into another thing with me, but I don’t care for public voting at all. I would vote a lot if it was private to me and only effected my feed.
I don’t think I do.
whats funny is I don’t have much negative dbzer0 experience until you two guys start making this about that.
So its hard for me to get into these things without harping on my personal philosophy. Which is that I think ideally this should mirror the way we would interact in person. So moderating or running a community is like running or being part of the core group that runs a club. Would you want to throw that to a robot? Basically I don’t feel people should create or run or moderate communities unless they enjoy it. So the idea of ai moderation is to me pointless. Of course at this point I notice you are talking instances. Boy that is different. This is more like talking about running the institution that allows spaces for clubs to meet. It kinda feels understandable then. Honestly people complain about being banned but I kinda feel like anyplace that bans me is kinda doing me a favor. Like I would like the option to just mark it permanent. Its less things I got to block. Its the same reason I would like blocking to be symetric. Saves me some work (ok and the creepy I turn them invisible so I don’t see them but they can watch me). I really would like to be able to block an instance seperately for communities or users. Ok as usually im digressing quite a bit but I guess in the end run I kinda see why at the instance level it might be used but I would be concerned it would start being used at the community level. It would be nice to know its happening at either level and have the ability to block them if a user is not wild about the concept.

one thing I really wish the federation had done was work more under a shared login system. something like saml. I would like to click on a peertube link and for it to create a user on the peertube system using any relevant customizations from my parent user and if I modify options on peertube I wish it would save that to my piefed user somewhere. like an other accounts tab or something.
