Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why don't movie ratings just have letters indicating objectionable material?
3·2 days agoI pay some attention to them. A movie called “Dirty Grandpa” I want to be R rated. Because, a PG rated “Dirty Grandpa” isn’t going to be very dirty, I think.
But, Hail Mary Project can be rated anything.
It might as well have been a yard, considering how the definition came about.
I’ve noticed a couple of sites pushing these things. I decline.
I’m glad physical books and long walks outdoors are still good alternatives, as long as I leave my phone at home.
I suspect it won’t be optional in the future, though. More and more there aren’t non-digital options to important functions. How long before we’re all forced to bank online, and those who can’t are dragged along by some sort of hodgepodge solution using public kiosks? They’ll force new accounts to be online only, and wait for the naysayers to die off. Cash will be outlawed.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's something that we can no longer enjoy thanks to technology?
7·7 days agoWe all made it out unscathed, after about eight summers of doing it together. We were all in our twenties, and believed we were immortal. I haven’t been in many years, and won’t be going again. It probably IS foolish today with the options available, but still something is lost when we’re never incommunicado anymore.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's something that we can no longer enjoy thanks to technology?
27·7 days agoBeing comfortable away from civilization.
I mean, very few people go off into the woods anymore without some way to communicate in case of emergency.
In the mid-80s I’d go off backpacking with friends for a week or ten days, and the only hope we had if we something went terribly wrong was the occasional park ranger, or other hikers. We might run across four or five other people on the trail per day, but some days no one at all. We’d set up camp by a pond and be the only ones there, and probably for miles in any direction. We never thought about it, because there wasn’t the option of taking a GPS, or phone, and we didn’t bother with a radio because we never needed one before, so we just never thought to take one.
It was fine. We had skills, we were prepared, we had each other. We had experience. That’s all we needed.
I suspect that is very rare now. It would be considered foolish. Fewer and fewer people have the experience of being that disconnected anymore.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Windows 11 is failing as an operating system
1·13 days agoI remember finding this out a while back. I tried to install it, but had some problem I don’t recall. I’ll try again. Thanks.
EDIT: Ah, right. It doesn’t find my mounted drives nor my shared drives from my server. Nor does it show previews of any filetype but images (which IS nice), just a big icon for text files, for instance.
I suppose there are fixes for these things, but I didn’t find anything in configuration or in the help section of the website after a quick search. That’s as far as I’m willing to dive into this, because I know I could spend hours on this, and still not find a solution from past experience.
Thanks, anyway.

Oi. I had mine in my hall closet, looks a lot like yours, including the Noctua cooler and stack of hard drives. In spite of adding a vent to the top of the closet door, and a big gap at the floor it still got too hot. I ended up moving it to the spare bedroom.
