  • A clear plastic cup and a paper card large enough to cover the opening… Wait for the fly to land on a window, and approach slowly with the cup while distracting them with your other hand. When close, cover the fly by pressing the cup on the window and slip the card underneath the opening. It helps if the fly has tired itself out first. Works well for all manner of bugs.

  • These are all free without ads:

    VLC for movies and music.

Simple Text Editor, which is a lightweight and easy to use text editor. You can configure it to save on exit and open the last file.

    ReadEra PDF reader.

RadioDroid is a free and open source internet radio player. Search for stations and genres around the world. It’s waaay better than any of the other things on the Play Store.

Shader Editor if you like programming GLSL fragment shaders.

Krita for digital painting on a tablet.

Autodesk Sketchbook for digital painting on a phone or tablet. It has a paid tier, but the free version is great on its own.

Open Camera, open source camera software. It lets you overcome the limitations of the default app. I like using it when I want a more analog look (I disabled image noise reduction in app).

Manual Camera is a good camera app if you want total control over certain thing like focus, white level, etc.

Hacker’s Keyboard. It’s got freakin arrow keys. Plus easy access to common characters needed for programming.

    And last but not least

F-Droid, which is like a play store for free and open source software (FOSS). Lots of things there.

  • AM2R a.k.a. Another Metroid 2 Remake It’s a fan game of the 2nd Metroid game, and is considered one of the best of the series, even though it’s not an official release. It’s more like Super Metroid than the Gameboy title is. You’ll have to search around a bit due to Nintendo’s D&C, but it’s not hard to find (the internet archive has recent versions).

Minecraft It’s a good port, but probably best played with a gamepad &| tablet.

Portal Knights A minecraft-like voxel game with more satisfying progression and combat, but less creative freedom. Plays well on newish devices, epsecially with lower-quality settings.

Terraria It’s a great game all-around, but harder to play on mobile than PC.

Emulation This goes without saying if you like retro gaming. The best emulators I’ve found are the .emu apps by Robert Broglia. They can be bought from the play store, or obtained for free at his Github page. If you like original Playstation games, get the Duckstation emulator (produced by another dev.).
