Lemmy does seem to have some insular thinking (just like all social media communities). Feels like you can actually have discussion and at least learn why people hold those views instead of just being chastised.

I admit the “don’t be evil” slogan was very effective on me. I fell for it, but never again.

9·11 months agoAhh fantastic point. There isn’t really an incentive for the individuals to maintain/perpetuate the institution.

4·11 months agoI understand the sentiment. I’m wondering about the efficacy of the strategies to achieve those end goals.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why don't communist movements focus on creating and nurturing employee owned businesses?
12·11 months agoI don’t agree with this. Shareholders extracting value from a company is arguably more of an ‘inefficency’ than treating employees fairly. Well treated employees provide a benefit to the company while shareholders purely remove resources.
I have no data to back up my claim, just logic, so I could very well be wrong.

10·1 year agoI think the goal should be slow continuous growth. It’s a social media tool and that requires enough engaged users so it doesn’t feel dead. As you pointed out, we’re not there yet. I also think a huge jump in new users would be detrimental. Without central leadership of traffic and hardware Lemmy requires longer to respond to changes in user load. Nothing would be more detrimental to adding long term engaged users than an influx of new users that caused infrastructure overloading.
We’re very spoiled with reliability these days. People are not interested in unreliable access to their doom scrolling (myself included, unfortunately).
This writeup is such an interesting perspective of social media.
It’s the medium for the human hive mind. It’s civilization’s consciousness. It’s beyond any individual’s control or comprehension, and it exists for advertising…

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Could the US Government Self-Host a Fediverse Server?English
6·2 years agoPersonally I think the biggest hurdle will be moderation and defederation as it pertains to the first amendment. I believe there was already a supreme Court case where blocking a user on Twitter (from an official govt account) was deemed unconstitutional. This precedent might mean a govt instance is not allowed to defederate with any other server unless they defederate with all(?) This is pure speculation on my part, but I can guarantee it would go to the courts.

I’m very confused about your comment.
a) Is it not okay to use ‘big boy’ words? Do you disagree with the statement or just with the diction?
b) The second point you make has nothing to do with my comment. I’d have thought you accidentally responded to the wrong comment except for you pointing out ‘insular’. Why are these things relevant to the discussion?
