Thank you! I checked #3 and it’s not that. I haven’t found the setting for #2 yet, but I just wanted to say I really appreciate your help.

I’m actually not 100% sure how to answer that. It’s just a “share” configured through the Unraid UI, being accessed by a docker container running on the same machine (binhex’s Jellyfin image.) I think that the “share” in this context is essentially just a mount point, but it’s also (optionally) exposed as an SMB share externally.

It’s an Unraid share on a local NAS, and the array is formatted as xfs.

I made the switch a few months back as well. Have you had the issue where"Recently Added" just straight up doesn’t work? It’s about 50/50 for me whether my new downloads show up there or not, and if they do, it’s usually inserted somewhere down the list between other things I added months ago. Not sure if there’s a workaround, but it’s my #1 complaint with Jellyfin. Otherwise, it’s been great.

Literally does not matter. There’s always going to be someone smarter, harder-working, or more privileged than you. The sooner you accept that and take ownership of your own experience without comparing yourself to others, the better off you’ll be.

I switched to Jellyfin recently and I mostly prefer it over Plex, except for lack of organization tools and the goddamn roulette wheel that is seeking. Why is it that seeking defaults to 30 second intervals, requires a click to confirm, and occasionally just jumps to some random point near the beginning of the file? Great software overall, but it’s wild to me that this basic playback functionality is so hit or miss.

I run it on an NVIDIA Shield. Can’t speak to any others with certainty, but from a quick search, there are guides for installing on Fire Stick and ONN devices too.

I suspect it’ll run on just about any Android or Google TV device as long as the default launcher setting isn’t locked down, and even then you can probably enable it with a couple quick ADB commands.

Not true, unless by “build yourself” you mean install Projectivy Launcher on any Android box that supports it.

I think the disconnect here is a lot of people buy the “lifetime” Plex Pass, which is a one-time cost and not a subscription. Saying “X feature will be locked behind a subscription” implies some new pricing model and leaves users who paid a one-time cost years ago wondering if it’s time to look for an alternative or if they’re completely unaffected.

“a subscription” is ambiguous as to whether it’s being locked behind the existing Plex Pass or some new/additional subscription model. The title could have more accurately stated that remote streaming is becoming a Plex Pass feature. As is, Plex Pass users (many of whom bought the lifetime pass years ago,) can’t tell from the title whether this is a new subscription cost or if they’re completely unaffected.

“Clickbait” might be a little harsh, but I get where they’re coming from.

Wow. I thought a couple of his old Linux Sucks talks were kind of funny, but never knew anything about him personally. Kind of sad to learn he’s an asshole.

I’m using a new M3 MBP at work and it literally brought my compile time from 20+ minutes on a pretty beefy Windows machine down to about 6 minutes. Based on that alone, it’s hard to imagine using anything else for serious dev work at this point.

Having said that, there’s a lot of goofy Apple fuckery going on too. Multi-monitor support is limited to two displays, so if you want more than that you’re stuck with an expensive third-party dock and DisplayLink drivers, which cause color artifacting in high motion like you’d expect from a heavily compressed video, which leads to eye strain. Mouse support is terrible without a third party app to fix the goofy scroll wheel acceleration curve they’ve built in, and even buying first-party peripherals doesn’t solve it. I need a third party app just to prevent Mac OS from opening iTunes every time I connect a Bluetooth headset… So many little dumb things to deal with.

FFXI for me. It’s a lot better post Steam Deck, but last time I set it up on Linux (maybe a year ago) a lot of the visual mods that are registry-based weren’t working properly, the font rendering was awful, and certain addons and plugins just didn’t work (guildwork in particular since it launches a background exe, others related to showing/hiding certain UI elements.) It runs, but it’s far from comfortable. Might be good enough in a VM and I’ll probably try again next time I resubscribe.

How weird, I was just thinking about this guy yesterday after forgetting about him for probably ~5 years. I got pretty into buying, repairing, and modding broken iPods for a little while thanks in part to some of his goofy but informative teardown videos. Still have a small box of parts somewhere.

Haven’t watched the video yet, but I’ll be a little surprised if he doesn’t immediately fire up Shrek to test whatever media player came with his distro.

No judgment here, and to be clear I don’t mean to invalidate her suspicion or yours. It wouldn’t surprise me if there were unethical individuals in HR who take things like this as an opportunity to call out things they don’t like… But in my experience, the asking part is pretty typical, and I doubt it was targeted.

For me, I-9 verification was very early on in the onboarding process. A list of eligible I-9 documents was provided in the onboarding paperwork and HR scheduled a time in my first day or two to show them on camera. Took maybe 2 minutes once we were actually on the call.

I didn’t press them on why when asked to unblur, but given I-9 is about presenting documents that verify your identity / eligibility to work, I suspect it’s best practice to avoid any obvious image processing as a matter of policy. At the very least, not having to worry about the paper getting blurred just makes things easier. Ultimately, they’re keeping these images on file to cover their own ass, so they want them to look as clear and legitimate as possible.
