It’s a very basic principle, that you don’t create powers that could be abused. That they haven’t been abused yet does not make doing so ok. It like saying it’s ok that my government was given the power to lock people up with no reason or due process because they haven’t used it yet.

And also until the committee designing it has it members on it representing the interests of users. The point that this was lacking in the original is-a-trap article is an important one and is also being missed.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do older generations pee all over the toilet seat?English
10·3 days agoI think this is the answer, but peeing on the seat is another level of dysfunctional. Peeing standing up without lifting the seat is not ok even by guys-peeing-standing-up standards. And peeing on the seat while sitting down suggests another problem, and then if you have that problem, not wiping off the seat is even more inconsiderate than leaving a few splashes on the rim of the bowl itself. I have to wonder if some of these boomers have some dementia.
Have you ever used bank software, or some government services site? It is often really hard to not get the idea that it was designed and run by idiots. As someone who’s worked as a software developer most of my life, it is not difficult for me to believe it, either.

Linux@lemmy.ml•New Linux tech compresses memory in RAM, as RAM, for 452x speedup — new CRAM method offers giant boost to compressed memory readsEnglish
1·7 days agoRight, a stack that was itself read-only would be hard to use! :^D C definitely lets you modify the things in the stack. (Ah the fun of bugs where you accidentally overwrite other shit on the stack!) I don’t know Rust, but it would not surprise me if Rust only had immutable things on the stack.

Linux@lemmy.ml•New Linux tech compresses memory in RAM, as RAM, for 452x speedup — new CRAM method offers giant boost to compressed memory readsEnglish
1·8 days agoI’m drawing on some old memories here, so I could be mistaken, but I don’t think the stack is read only, not in C anyway or in the underlying machine code. If it is faster it has to do with greater overhead needed managing the larger heap and perhaps being more efficient to push and pop with small offsets to a local stack frame vs large absolute addresses.

2·11 days agoI don’t think they are the same category of thing. Ocean is a design system. Breeze is a theme.
Edit: now I’m less sure. This seemed to say it is both a style and a “design system” which I took to mean a technical mechanism for styles, but now i’m less clear what they mean.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why is searching the Internet so frustrating now?English
21·12 days agoThere are leaked emails from Google (from many years ago) where it was proposed to purposely degrade search quality to increase ad clicks. While some at Google responded with dismay as this, it is not a great leap to assume that this faction eventually won and they did in fact deliberately do that. Advertising is Google’s main revenue source, they are clearly motivated to do so.

0·12 days agoSearch quality has been degrading for years, even before AI was involved.

Well without a real sense of the size of the atmosphere (which most people don’t have), that doesn’t really mean anything, other than it being a big number. Any impressively big number can be insignificant in relation to something big enough to easily absorb it.
However, we’ve added to the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by 50%. I think that says it really is significant.
