It’s a sliding scale; it isn’t just ‘full privacy’ or ‘no privacy’.

Not only is it a sliding scale, it’s a multidimensional one because it also depends on what your threat model is. “Privacy” from an abusive partner snooping on your phone to discover your escape plan, “privacy” from Target trying to market diapers to you when nobody even knows you’re pregnant yet, “privacy” from Cambridge Analytica trying to psychoanalyze you so they can better target you with right-wing propaganda, and “privacy” from an authoritarian government because you’re a journalist trying to protect whistleblowers are all different goals that may require different strategies to achieve.

Efficient activism will make you a target for law enforcement.

…And privacy – better known as OPSEC, in this context – is a big part of how you defend yourself.

In other words, privacy is important because all those “more important problems” are dependent on it!

  • They’re both really good (considerably better at what they do than FreeCAD is, to be honest), but they don’t do what FreeCAD does. Blender is for art, so that’s a different thing entirely. OpenSCAD does mechanical part design, but it only does mechanical part design. FreeCAD can do architectural CAD, BIM (Building Information Modeling), civil engineering stuff (e.g. working with survey data/site elevation), FEA (Finite Element Analysis), 2D drafting, stuff with NURBS and point clouds, texturing/lighting/rendering, CAM and CNC (i.e. toolpaths for a mill or 3D printer), etc.

Well you definitely don’t want to put the power cables in the same conduit with the data cables (PoE being the exception). Run two conduits (one for power, one for data) separated by the distance specified by your local electrical code (probably at least a foot or so, and wider is better). If the conduit is metallic, then the spacing can be less.

    In those conduits, run:

    1. The wires you actually know you need right now, and
    2. A pull string.

Sony, for all sort of reasons (the rootkit and other DRM, pushing proprietary formats like MemoryStick and ATRAC3, removing OtherOS (a.k.a. Linux) support from the Playstation, etc.).

Blizzard, because of Freecraft and BNetD (I was boycotting them long before they merged with Activision).

Ideally, I would boycott Nestle and the other abusive agri-conglomerates, but honestly probably a lot of their products slip through because (a) it’s hard to tell what’s made by who because of all the subsidiary brands, and (b) with all the consolidation, pretty much everything is made by some shitty megacorp these days. I mean yeah, if I eschewed normal chain stores entirely and tried to buy everything from local small businesses or something then I guess I could avoid them, but ain’t nobody got time (or money!) for that.

  • In other words, my answer to OP’s question is “lobby for improvements to building codes so that all multifamily housing is required to be decently soundproofed.”

(I live in a single-family house myself, but I’m not so naive as to think that the zoning laws that led to such an oversupply of houses/undersupply of dense multifamily housing are either equitable or sustainable.)

    1. Using a chef’s knife, cut around core and twist to separate halves. The core will remain stuck on one side.
    2. Holding the side with the core in your off-hand, (gently) chop the knife into the core and twist to remove it from the avocado half. Reaching around the back side of the blade, pinch the core off with your fingers.
    3. Scoop the avocado flesh from the skins using a large spoon, then slice/dice/mash as desired.

That’s how I learned to do it (in a tex-mex chain restaurant), anyway. I think maybe we were supposed to use one of those cut-proof gloves for step #2, but nobody bothered.
