🎬 Why Recoder?

I used to edit family videos in Kdenlive without a problem — it handled footage from all our devices without complaining. But then I switched to DaVinci Resolve, and suddenly nothing worked right. My Sony Alpha 7C, my Galaxy S24, and my wife’s iPhone all produced files that Resolve couldn’t handle without transcoding.

😤 Too Much Fuss, Too Many Steps

Every time I wanted to edit, I had to hunt down the right ffmpeg settings and manually run them on each video — a frustrating and repetitive task.

My typical workflow is simple: I create one folder per event on an external HDD and drop in videos from all our cameras. A script renames the files based on the date and time so I can easily sort them. But for Resolve, everything has to be transcoded to DNxHD — which only supports resolutions like 1920×1080 and 1280×720.

🔄 Vertical Videos? Extra Pain

That also meant vertical videos couldn’t work. So now, I rotate them during transcoding to preserve resolution and rotate them back in Resolve during editing.

✨ Enter Recoder

I built Recoder to automate this annoying step — so I could spend more time editing memories and less time fiddling with command-line tools.

That ones is very difficult, there are so many favorites like Israeli Sabbich, Korean Beef BBQ, Silesian beef roulades and so on. But the thing for what I think tastes best is:

Tuna Sashimi

It’s the food which brings me back to Japan over and over. I couldn’t find this quality anywhere else in the world and god knows I tried.

I met her end of 2020 and we stated dating on the spot while I was on a business trip to South Korea during the pandemic.

The best is to move to that country and start working there an you will be forced to learn it.

Urgh I didn’t know about the license change, that’s a bummer. How come every project with ‘Open’ in it’s name goes a similar route and becomes not open?

Now it’s freeware with available source, but you can’t build anything on top of it.

The thing is, it doesn’t matter how many languages you speak somehow you end up not being able to communicate anyway because of the language. Some anecdotal evidence:

• I speak Polish, German, Swedish and English. Me and my siblings went to Morocco for vacation, my sister was vegetarian and we wanted to order something without meat. The guy at the street food stand didn’t understand and then he asked: Do you speak Arabic? No, Do you speak Spanish? No, do you at least speak French? Also no. None of the languages helped even tho the other guy also spoke 3 languages.

• After speaking 4 languages fluently I moved to Korea thinking it’ll be easy to pick up another language. After 4 years of living here I still can’t even have a very simple conversation. The language is so different that even after trying hard and spending money and time the learning doesn’t move forward. And me working from home mostly with Europeans makes it even more difficult, but I can’t get a local job without the language, chicken and egg problem.

Every language is good to know, and I kind of agree with my grandfather that every language is like another hand you have to disposal, but somehow you end up in situations that even 6 hands are not enough ;)

I think the title of polyglot is just silly. I speak 4 languages fluently but I would never introduce myself as a polyglot.

I don’t mind paying. In fact I do that to keep my privacy by hosting most of my social media myself instead of using big corps social media and other services like immich, ollama, home assistant, Firefox sync, ttrss, and many more.

I’m not only paying for the hardware but also with a lot of time to host and keep everything up.

You could install peertube and share other peoples traffic.
