Linux@lemmy.ml•GNOME Desktop top bar - waste of space?English
61·7 days agoAgreed 100%
Twice as bad when you have a VM running Gnome open inside Gnome host machine.
There should be a simple Tweaks option “hide Gnome titlebar” or better yet a per-window preference setting

Linux@lemmy.ml•Handled a ThinkPad today. What distro should I go with? Ubuntu? Arch?English
1·9 days agoWhat is the usecase?
If this is a primary driver for things like work or your primary personal email/web/productivity machine, IMO you want Fedora for stability
If this will be for games, there are good dedicated distros (consider Batocera if you love retro!)

Thank you for your past service o7
(I want to normalize open source contributors getting the same kind of recognition for providing a Public Good that we currently give to teachers, de-escalatory police, and following-legal-orders military)

Get LibreWolf . They take FF builds and rip out the telemetry/ads/AI/enshit.
It’s… beautiful

16·2 months agooh and props for that… for doing and making new things in general
Just that distro-where-a-theme-would-do is something I see a lot of and people might wind up tackling a larger harder problem than they need to and not spending as much time & effort on the stuff they intended to.
And, a lot lot lot more people can easily download & appreciate a theme than move distros (though some perverse individuals make a habit of the latter)

62·2 months agoLike a lot of Linux distros, this should have just been a window manager theme and maybe a helper app
Absolutely no sense bringing in stuff like init system and depmod and C compiler version when what you care about is UI theming

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Been seeing a lot of posts about replacing Spotify and such, so I wrote up a guide on how I did just thatEnglish
9·3 months agoTBH I chose Funkwhale for my solution because it looked easy and out of the box, I just add a single Docker and subdomain to my existing site.
It wound up being more or less what you describe.
I may well follow OP’s guide and nuke my Funkwhale despite the work I put into it and the fact that it does basically work for its intended purpose
