2·1 year agoWhere does something like “use a DC motor to build a tiny little fan” stand, in terms of safety?

3·1 year agoThanks, fire safety concerns have definitely played a major role in why I haven’t actually started building stuff. I’ll keep this in mind.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are the best resources for getting started with hands-on electronics and robotics?
4·1 year agoWhat you said makes sense. To provide context for why I am/was looking for the exact opposite –
I have a long string of failed hobbies and junk accumulated from all the stuff I’ve bought for them. I carry a ton of guilt because of this.
I guess I’m too hesitant to buy parts and have them lying around if I don’t end up using them all if I abandon this too. That’s the reason why I was hoping to buy a fixed set of parts for specific projects so that way I can at least convince myself that I used it all at least once.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Can anyone name some mysteries in stories where the answer ended up delivering and was better than the mystery itself?
3·1 year agoAnd whatever you do, don’t watch the sequel. It’s quality is the exact opposite of the first movie.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's something that seems obvious within your profession, but the general public seems to misunderstand?
1·1 year agoWhat about contamination in disaster sites like Chernobyl or Fukushima? Is that also mainly radioactive substances that we’re spread around the area by air/water making the whole place dangerous to live or are other previously-non-radioactive objects radioactive now?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What would you do if a scraggly homeless person knocked on your door, and all he asked was for a sandwich, a bottle of water, a bath, and perhaps a beard trim?
9·1 year ago“I shouldn’t give them money because drugs”
I have a roof over my head, eat thrice a day, and have a loving family. Yet there are days when I want to drown myself in alcohol or weed. Who am I to judge a homeless person if they choose to do drugs and forget their suffering for a little while?
I always give money, if anything, to the few of them in my neighborhood. Whether it’s food , clothes, drugs or something else - they know what they need better than I know it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's Some Tech That Was Better Than It Is Now?
6·1 year agoThe new ones can do what you want too though. Just press the “clean” button on the roomba twice. Or the “clean everywhere” option in the app, if you’ve set it up.
In both cases, it goes wherever it can and returns to the starting point.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What industry secret are you aware of that most people aren't?
37·1 year agoAt this point, I’m not sure if I should interpret that as “very recyclable” or “barely recyclable”.

2·2 years agoI don’t know why you are being an ass to me. I literally admitted that my lack of skill was the issue right at the beginning.
And then people wonder why noobs don’t want to bother with Linux.

32·2 years agoIt’s been 8+ years since I last used Ubuntu on my laptop. I faced massive issues with staying on the latest version of Firefox because apt had a much older version, and installing using the gui installer wouldn’t replace the apt version etc etc. Probably a PEBKAC issue…
But, I do want to know- is this not an issue any more? Will
aptinstall the latest (or almost latest) version of Firefox? Can I update it from the inbuilt update tool in Firefox?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What happened to "You're welcome!" as a response to "Thank You"? It's not even included in the canned answers on an apple watch. Have we as a society abandoned it?
2·2 years agoDuolingo taught me “wilkommen” for “welcome.” Is that used IRL?
Todoist works great for me. I like the recurring tasks feature which lets me clear up a lot of headspace. “Clean XYZ every 11 days #chore” is all the syntax you need to setup a recurring task that’s categorised under the “chore” category.
Have you tried diluting your cycle with some water or turpentine to reduce its viscosity?
I just checked out fWallet and it doesn’t support importing random PDFs so that’s a huge downside to me since a lot of events I attend only send a PDF with barcodes/QR codes.
