How much easier it’s gotten and most of what you download nowadays is usually exactly what you’re looking for. In the 90’s/00’s, alot of what was pirated had the potential to just be total BS or mislabeled, so you were never entirely certain what it was you were getting. I think Madonna had even gotten into it and released a one of her own albums as a fake download with her telling the listener “What the fuck are you doing?” At the time I mostly got music, though the Dreamcast pirating scene was pretty big for me for awhile. I think anymore though I’m probably more interested in obscure RPG books now.

I think with torrenting, there’s a certain amount of trust that’s inherent with some torrents by virtue of the number of downloads/seeders there are on a torrent. At least for me, I can assume, ok, there’s 100 people seeding this thing, chances are this is exactly what it says it is, otherwise this many people wouldn’t be still seeding it (you can fool some people some of the time, or something like that). I don’t pirate nearly as often as I did when I was younger, but now I feel the need to use protection (via a VPN) because you just don’t know who might be watching. In my entire time having pirated stuff over multiple decades, I had only ever gotten a single letter from my ISP, so it’s not something that I ever felt particularly afraid of, but you never know and it’s better to be safe about that stuff.

Overall maybe only like 5–10%. Known numbers always, unknown numbers get iffy when I might be expecting a call from somewhere but don’t have their number saved.

It’s so dumb, like of all the challenges facing us as a species now, THAT’S the shit that people are getting worked up about? Life on Earth for humanity is in the process of going through a set of major environmental changes that we’re probably not ready for and is going to have catastrophic results for some… and there’s people out there getting bent out of shape about pronouns and sexual orientation. We need to be doing alot more preparing for what’s coming over the next few years and a lot less bitching about things that don’t personally affect us. It seemed like we had made some big strides for awhile there, and that seemingly got erased within the past 8 years.

I don’t actually like validation, recognition, or getting compliments, but I somehow feel slighted when I don’t get them and think I should’ve.

I use tagging for sorting media that falls into multiple categories and defies normal hierarchical methods. I didn’t know about tagging users on Lemmy though, but I don’t know that I honestly will use it ever. You’re all just random people talking into the void, hell, half (or more) of the people here may very well be bots, I don’t know. The idea of tagging people based on past interactions seems a bit weird to me I guess (not that I don’t see uses for tagging for organization in general).

Edit: actually, I don’t even know if user tags are supported by Voyager, the main app I use to access lemmy. So, that too.

I’ve run into exactly the same issue with my large ttrpg ebook/pdf collection (+100k file data hoarding… it’s not a problem, I swear) and I’ve not really found a good option I’m entirely happy with. Calibre duplicates everything and I don’t like the thought of having my collection’s organization tied to a specific piece of software if I just delete my duplicates. Plus I’m elitist and think the UI/logo are gross to look at.

Zotero is the least worst option I’ve found, but it’s geared towards scholarly journals and such, so not great, but serviceable. Not sure if it’s on linux though.

Jellyfin is apparently able to handle ebooks with a plugin, though I didn’t particularly care for it when I tried it months ago.

There’s a handful of other ebook software out there, mostly geared towards comics/manga, so depending on what you have those might be worth looking for.

I’d like to use Obsidian for it and just turn the directory into a vault and let it automatically scan the folders for files, but that doesn’t work great either.

The best piece of software I’ve seen that could potentially handle it is an app called Stashapp… which is unfortunately geared towards adult film. But it’s feature-set if it could be applied to PDFs seems like it would be ideal.

Rumspringa is a rite of passage for the Amish, I think they’re saying you’re disconnected from society, though that kind of gets at what I was saying about my kids. Younger generations are more connected now than any previous generation, but they just don’t care as much about what the older generations were into. While you’re aware of most of the big franchises through cultural osmosis, like what the original commenter was saying, it’s not a priority. For me and my generation that feels odd I think, at least growing up for me I went through a period of trying to get exposed to those big cultural landmarks, music, movies, tv, and books. I assumed those things must’ve gotten popular with the older cool kids for a reason, so I wanted to experience it for myself, if just to be able to understand the odd reference when it came up.

As a 40+ year old white American, I agree with most of this list (I’d reduce “Hannibal Lecter series” down to just “Silence of the Lambs”), but if I were to ask my 6–12 year old kids about these, I feel like they wouldn’t know who 1/3rd of these are. I’d be curious to see if there was a common thread or set of threads between all of these that point to what traits our Western society value/avoid or what makes a successful franchise in the West.

I think it should be legal, with extra protections for the workers to protect them from exploitation and abuse. Unfortunately though, our entire economic system is exploitative, so I’m not sure if it would ever entirely be by choice that somebody turned to prostitution, though labor itself is never entirely by choice. I only work at my job because I have to, not because I really want to. A worker selling their body to perform legal labor for money is on par with a person selling their body for another’s sexual gratification. Making it illegal just makes it worse for the workers, since they’re obviously going to do it anyways and won’t get any protections from the law.

Sex doesn’t always have to be for love, equating it with love is something religious people have forced on the world to get over their own religion-induced guilt over the whole thing. Bonobos have a crazy amount of sex and use it for all sorts of social interactions, it’s something animals do to feel good and relieve stress. There’s instances of other primates even engaging in prostitution as well, where they trade sex for food, and prostitution is one of, if not the oldest job among humans.

I used Win10 mostly without issue and when I transitioned to Win11 that went without issue as well and it’s been pretty much smooth sailing the whole time. The few annoyances I had with it, I was able to find something that fixed the issue, it just works. The only thing I really didn’t like was that the only reason I transitioned to Win11 as early as I did was because of an update they sent out that made it sound at the time like I had to switch over, something about the wording made it seem like I had no choice, I remember it being a bit confusingly worded. I had wanted to hold out as long as possible on Win10, but because of that went ahead with the switch. It’s been fine since then, but I would’ve preferred not having to switch because of that.

I firmly believe that love should be color blind, which is why I never see any red flags.

I have encountered this issue before when I tried using Obsidian my RPG pdf collection (10,000s of files), would not recommend. I do still like Obsidian and will keep using it, but would something like Trillium work as a sort of PDF library software for a massive amount of files like that? The main need is to be able sort/categorize game systems using tags, link to pdfs, and maybe have some sort of Dataview-esque query capabilities. Zotero is the least worst option, but it still has some annoyances for me and I’ve still been looking for something that could help me organize better. I know this is billed as a note-taking app, so it’s a weird use-case, but Obsidian was pretty close to being a decent solution, if not for the slow speed issues.

I’ll still vote for her, even though I’ve thought she’s been an ineffectual VP and was just a bad presidential candidate in 2020. During the 2020 Dem primary debates she basically got shutdown by Tulsi Gabbard and never really recovered from that, up until Biden picked her as VP. Her previous record would probably make her a liability amongst liberals, but there’s not much choice now. She doesn’t seem to have much charisma or inspire much enthusiasm. She’s not old though, so that’s a plus in her favor. Being a black woman is sure to excite elements of the party that would find that important, as it would be another historic first for the country if she were elected. I’d just be happy to avert fascism with whomever.

I wanted to like Google, I bought into the whole ecosystem and still regularly use my gmail account, but they’ve fallen quite far in my eyes. They’ve killed off multiple features I used extensively, Search, the thing they should be good at, just isn’t as dependable as it used to be, I don’t trust using Chrome anymore, and the company overall just seems like a pale reflection of its former self. I just don’t trust them as a company. Not as bad as Meta or anything Musk touches, but still bad.

Depends on how hard performing tasks are. Can I punch trees to get wood, it doesn’t hurt like hell and doesn’t break my fists? Can I dig through the earth quickly with just my bare hands? Can I construct a dwelling relatively easily? If yes, then I think I’d be ok after getting over the initial shock of “WTF?”

If we’re talking real world physics, then I’m probably dead the first night.

So useless that they’re probably just going to convert over to AI chat apps and you’ll just know from the get-go that everybody you talk to is a bot (instead of just 4 out of 5 users being bots). I’m guessing they’ll farm that sweet, juicy user-data from however many years now to train their AI on. Base level will be a semi-interested friend, but the higher-subscription level you pay into will unlock romantic options, naughty (ai-generated) pics, and they’ll eventually add a feature where you can go on virtual dates with your AI companion and they can scan your pictures/photos and make comments on what you “saw together” on your date. Maybe they’ll even insert themselves into the images to make it seem like they were really there. Hell, they’ll probably even get to a point where you can have live voice chats with them.

Wakanda Forever. First part where we’re saying goodbye to Chadwick was good in a sad way, but I couldn’t stand anything else that happened after that. I was just so annoyed with every character, I hated every minute of it.
