Huge parts of Mexico are in a major drought right now, so there’s literally not enough water to go around. There is also a housing shortage in the cities (due to a lack of building new apartments, and due to the shortage of older tree-lined neighborhoods - as elsewhere, what’s being built now is not enough and not so nice), and gentrification is creating an affordability issue. It’s not dissimilar to the dissatisfaction in some US cities. Some of this is exacerbated by “digital nomads” who moved during COVID, but it’s also due to longer term government issues very similar to what the US is facing.

Anyway, “Gringo go home” is not an uncommon phrase graffitied on walls. I’d love to move there, but I don’t want to make life more difficult for locals, or be perceived as doing so.

Fucking love Mexico. I’m not Mexican, but do speak Spanish… Hot dang it’s a parade down the street literally every day, everyone is super out-of-their-way friendly, and the things they make are amazing: furniture, glass, textiles.

I would love to live there but the cartel violence is terrifying, as is the lack of water. Also… They don’t want me!

I’m living that way bc the economy was so bad in my 20s, and I feel like I’ve missed out. Couldn’t afford a house, or kids, or travel. I’m doing a little better now but a decade passed without me having many options.

Have you found Spanish Obsessed? It’s a Colombian/English couple who just have conversations in Spanish about random topics at an intermediate level.

They have several podcasts, so make sure to find the intermediate level for the conversations. Their beginner level has much more spoken English and basic Spanish vocab, which I’m not as into.

Do radio shows count? I don’t know that anyone has mentioned A Way With Words, in which the hosts answer questions from callers on any and all language questions.

My electric toothbrush was an amazing investment. It flashes red lights if I press too hard while brushing. You’d think after 10 years of this thing that I’d develop an intuition about how hard to press, but it still yells at me to back off all the time. It’s made a huge difference for the health of my teeth.

And your neck. Golly, that sucker does weird things later in life. Or is it moreso for women?
