144·2 months agoI build cross platform desktop software professionally.
Because of this I have to use and pretty deeply understand the inner workings of every OS.
I can state as absolute fact that every major operating system including Linux is an absolute pile of hot garbage.
The difference is that macOS and windows are garbage on purpose. There were deliberate decisions to enshitify them for profit. They spent time and money making the OS worse on purpose.
On Linux most of the shitty parts were designed with good intentions but just kinda suck (Wayland for example).
IIRC Pipewire isn’t really designed for pro-audio / music production. So if you want to do these things, Jack is still kind of unavoidable.
I appreciate the sentiment but I’m afraid this is a much too nuanced idea for the masses to understand.

But it should be pretty safe to just post it here. If not I can give you my pubic key and you can encrypt the link?

41·3 months agoHuman rights issues are not political. The attempt by the right to cast them as political serves to suppress discussion and progress by making the very act of discussing these things at all be seen as taboo. We can’t let that happen.
That point aside, libre software is pretty much inherently political.

3·3 months agoHow did you design this in a way that it would require a “substantial update” to swap out the API URL? It should be as easy as setting an environmental variable. There are many LLM providers and local LLMs that support the openAI API schema.

1·3 months agoYou may find a better answer in the distinction between “profit” and “exploit”.
Does GPL allow a corporation to profit off your work? Yes it does.
Does it allow them to exploit your work? In my opinion, no.
Compared to something like MIT which in my opinion lets them both profit and exploit you.
Disclaimer: I’m not a lawyer by any means, just a GPL advocate.

Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Should i pirate EVERYTHING or only things that i bought, but do not own?English
2·3 months agoPiracy isn’t stealing regardless.
Stealing is to deprive someone of something they posses.
It’s not possible to possess something that doesn’t exist yet. Your copy doesn’t exist until you make it (by downloading the file).
If you chose to not support creators by paying to copy thier work, that’s maybe unethical but it’s not stealing.
If you hack into a Sony server and copy an unreleased film, then delete their copy, that is maybe stealing. Anything short of that is just copying.

This is an actual problem and causes headaches for a lot of beginner programmers. The only solution aside from finding well written guides, is to just look everything up as you go like you are reading a legal text or something. Eventually it gets better, but also doesn’t because programmers are terrible at naming things and making assumptions.

2·3 months agoThis is a neat idea and it will totally work, but they need to be the EXACT same files down to the checksums and file names. This could be harder to pull off than it sounds but it’s absolutely possible.

IDK I think Wayland will be great some day. But right now we’re between x11 and Wayland an both options suck.
I’m just over here trying to record my desktop and take screenshots haha.
I understand the motivations here but my priorities do not align with this. Not once in my life has someone recorded my desktop without my permission. I support the idea of having a secure environment but its just a pretty bad UX in the meantime.
Dont take this the wrong way. I think Wayland is a good idea in general. I just wish there was something else to hold us over in the meantime and x11 isnt really that.
