  • I agree i should have used different words, scam-ableism is counter productive to educate about traps.

I am pretty sure my dad fell for one of these because an ad popt up trying to pay a digital parking meter.

Though he wasn’t trying to get access to illegal content what people behind this campaign are alluding towards.

Scams come in so many shapes and forms, there is accidental click and there is “looked like an official Netflix page”. How many people will knowingly pay for something they know is available for free?

  • I went to their website just to have a laugh. This is some real shizo propaganda.

You could replace all of it with: Only watch self sourced pirated media! Paying and relying on any service has inherent risks

“1 in 3 (32%) people who illegally stream in the UK say they, or someone they know, have been a victim of fraud, scams, or identity theft as a result.”

320/1000 people know someone unlucky enough to fall for a scam.

This risk increases significantly when users exchange credit or debit card information to view content on unregulated and illicit websites.

If you pay for your pirated content you are doing it wrong.

Watching content via an illicit source can expose younger viewers to age-inappropriate content. These unauthorised websites, devices, apps, add-ons, and the content they can access have no parental controls.

My kids get a tablet exclusively pointing to a private media server in order to obtain the parental controls for-profit services just don’t provide. I banned YouTube kids, it was a shitfest.

  • First, did you read even the research papers?

Secondly, none are out that are actually immune to jailbreaking lol, Where did that claim come from?

Gpt4 is just an llm. Indeed the better version of gpt3

Gpt4o and 1o (claude-sonnet possibly also) rely on the generative capacities of the gpt4 model but there is allot more going under the hood that is not simply “generate the next token”

We all agree that a pure text predictor are not at all intelligent.

The discussion at hand is wether the current frontier of ai has moved the needle up. And i still would call it pretty dumb, but moving that needle, it did. Somewhere around (x2y0.5) if i have to use the meme. Stating its (0,0) just means people aren’t interested enough to pay attention, that these aren’t just llm anymore. That’s their right but i prefer people stopped joining the discussion so uninformed.

  • At that point the computers is promoted (or enslaved depending on pov) and called a (home) server.

One nuance. You don’t need to provide access from outside your home network if you don’t want to open the ports, i prefer that most of services remain local for security anyway. Once those ports are open, you or anyone else can connect to the services using your_external_ip_address:portnumber

You also dont need to run it 24/7, i started with a minecraft server that ran on planned times only, then a system that was online during afternoon-evening but not at night-morning.

It is also possible if not recommended, to use a vpn to tunnel in your network and than you can access everything just like if you where at home from anywhere.

If it all sounds intimidating, a laptop to try things out will do fine. Don’t expect a perfect polished system on first try, i have redesigned my network from scratch multiple times over the years. If you do want to get serious there are plenty of offices that have “old” desktop servers with pretty impressive hardware, the fans may make a lot of noise though.

The Hardware in my current home server is mostly parts that got upgraded in my main pc. I have reached a point where i am willing to sometimes spend extra money on what my partner sometimes dubs “my second pc” but it is also doing a lot for us at this point. Much cheaper then a store-bought NAS.

  • Oh no worries, i am technical and autistic enough to setup systems that will serve my actual needs, regardless of economic/industry expectations.

Lutrius is great but i prefer Heroic game launcher, it can do the same but does also provides convenient acces to gog, epic and amazon licenses. I am only storing backup copies of games if i actually find it worth it to keep them, and i acquired a lot of mediocre titles over the years.

I also do still do use steam with little hate towards it there own implementation of proton is hard to beat in its reliance. I have yet to find a single game within my steam library that fails to work properly on arch.

Doesn’t stop me from working on my own alternative local game server parallel to it, Mhehehehe

Regardless i still feel like i should just be able to legally download some standalone offline installer from a website for later use. Especially for older games that used to have physical copies. whether or not my system can run that installer as it is, is morally irrelevant.

  • Yes.

What if i want to play the original portal game on a pc that cannot have internet? Steam does not allow me to download a straight installer, its a license with a long list of acceptable and non acceptable uses.

Don’t get me wrong i love valve and what they have done for gaming as a concept, as a linux i would not Be able to game as i do if it was not for proton.

But if i purchase a game i demand to own my copy.

I actually have a database where i keep pirate and cracked copies of games i own legit licenses because i refuse to have my rights limited simply because of the possibility of a victimless crime where checks note some big corp gets slightly less profit.

All games should be available standalone.

And while, am speaking my software opinions

If i buy a game license on one system it should cover that game all other platforms and systems. No more buying the same game twice just to play on different hardware. (This makes less sense if its a dedicated copy and not a license though)

All software from hardware that is no longer receiving support must be open sourced, i am looking at you near mint first gen ipad mini. I die before you end on a landfill in such good state.

  • Why? Does 95% of digital advertisement even serve a single valuable purpose?

I get that websites need funding and that legitimate business require some way communicate their services exist. We need to solve the problem for the former and create specialized accessible safe spaces for the later.

When is the last time anyone here saw an ad for a local business, when is the last time anyone recall willfully clicking one? Was there actually anything useful there?

From what i recall ads almost always are one of the following:

    • sex, barely legal drugs and predatory video games. (Lumped together to make a bad pun)

    • real product/fake price: oh this item isnt in stock plz look at catalog

    • politics, buy our guide to get rich, actual illegal scam operation.

None of them are honest or respectful to the customer. People aren’t prey, stop baiting.

Admittedly, for me this is personal. Autism means i experience the extra noise as painful. Plastering it on useful websites feels like a hostile attack to keep me out and unwelcome. I downright refuse to look at watch nor will i support them through ad free subscriptions to the point of it having become a digital disability.

But come on, can we smart online people really not figure out something else that isn’t based on literal brainwashing.
