Well the other kids thought those of us playing Dungeons and Dragons in the early 80s were nerds. Didn’t help that we also made the best grades. We also didn’t dress like the cool kids. It’s hard to separate all of the factors that caused us to get bullied.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Idea: A button on your phone app that plays a generic "number doesn't exist" recording to confuse spam callersEnglish
16·7 months agoA coworker of mine changed his voicemail message to start with the tri-tone that plays for a disconnected number (bah dah deet) followed by a normal voicemail greeting. The auto dialers delete the number from their list when they hear the tri-tone. It did confuse legitimate callers that were trying to reach him though.

9·8 months agoAh, the hazards of dd. The disk destroyer has been earned legitimately many times. I did it to myself once because I got cocky and failed to treat it with the proper fear and respect.

Linux@lemmy.ml•A big part of learning Linux is screwing up computers and starting over.English
7·10 months agoI tried to use dd with too much hubris once. I had to restore from backups (which ironically, I had made with dd). I’m usually overly cautious, but I was in a hurry.
I kind of expected this for Ubuntu.
I use Ubuntu, Red Hat/CentOS, and Windows.
If I had more free time I would try some more.
In reality, I feel like hide-the-pain Harold.
I have some RedHat CDs from the late 1990s (probably collectible at this point). I remember having a great deal of difficulty mounting my particular cd rom to even install it. I never got a driver for my video card at the time to work, so the “graphics” were awful (640x480 text only, iirc).
Anyway, few experiences will be more frustrating than trying to use them. I think it should be mandatory for aspiring computer people to play with them, so they can appreciate how far we have come.

3·1 year agoI think the selective attention test:
further illustrates the limits of human vision and mental processing quite well. Defense attorneys probably ought to play this video in any case where witness testimony is a big component of the prosecution’s case.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What would you rate Donald Trump's *actual* chances of getting more than two full terms as U.S. president?English
13·1 year agoTrump changes constitution to allow himself additional terms. Monkey paw curls. Obama term 3 confirmed.
I’m kind of hoping Trump kicks the bucket before the end of this term. Keep feeding him hamberders.
I think this picture would be an upgrade from my current situation. It is perfectly normal to have to use sudo find from root to locate anything, isn’t it? It’s especially fun when you don’t remember what the thing you are looking for is called and are trying to guess the name to find.

5·1 year agoI planted an oak and a redbud this year. In a couple decades they’ll look okay, I hope. Literally have to wrap them with special paper to keep them from getting sunburned while they are small.
This area naturally only grows trees along creek beds. The natural plants are Blackland Prairie- tall grasses and “weeds.” The HOA would have a cow if I let it go natural.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•What open-source applications do you use?English
3·1 year agoI use GVIM everyday.
I frequently use CentOS because that is what the embedded system I work on runs.
I use cygwin regularly professionally and at home. Identifying specific software within it is tough, but I definitely use grep and g++ all of the time.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is the smallest city in your country that everyone can still instantly recognise the name of? What is it famous for?English
16·1 year agoUsed to be Dallas was pretty famous- Kennedy shooting, cheerleaders, and a titular TV show.
I’d say Salem, Massachusetts (pop just under 45k) is pretty famous thanks to the witch trials.
And remember his definition of anti-Semitism includes accurately reporting the activities of Israelis in Gaza.
