I’m new as in this is my first day using lemmy. I don’t know anything about lemmy etiquette and don’t want to do anything bad
thanks and have an amazing day! also plz be kind :D
Bots turn down from 10 to 3
Trolls turn down from 11 to 4 (depending on the instance)
Downvotes don’t mean anything and your comments can’t generally be buried.
Mods/Admins are generally far less petty
Most instances are more open about things that are posted, even if the inhabitants of that instance are less accepting of it.
Every instance has it’s own ettiquite, be sure to read the stuff in the welcome.
All the lurkers said hi!
First thing, Lemmy is in need of content and likes recruiting. Hence you got 315 replies, heh.
Basically, if you aren’t a bigot, you don’t have to worry about what you say. You can be politically incorrect in any direction and not get a global/shadowban from the Fediverse.
Each instance has its own flavor and etiquette.
If you haven’t already then you need to switch to Linux
Working on it lol.
Dad doesn’t want to switch to linux, because “his files” or something (libreoffice and ddg??? he uses ddg on some devices already and libreoffice is like free ms365) so if I get Frankenstein the Floor Computer running, yes, I will linux (I plan on dual booting mint/arch, but not being toxic about it)
this, but unironically.
Then keep reminding everyone you use Arch.
But only some distros should be used !
Arch
Debian
Mint
NixOSDid I miss any?

It took me like 5 years before I figured out Miley Cirus, Hannah Montana, and Taylor Swift were three different people.
Oh, I might have upvoted this comment, but it’s only so I can come back with my army of Swifties,.Ciruses and Montanas to downvote you to the shadow realm.
/s that was awesome
I stand corrected, lol.
TempleOS and Miley Cyrus Linux
only a few hundred

I knew there’s thousands of distros, but didn’t ever think about it that hard or visualize it, that’s a lot now that I can see it!
I have seen a video on that. I am not a 40y/o discord mod lmao (/j)
(no longer /j in this part) I’ll try arch, and if I’m really that bored, I might try it, but it looks like something I don’t want to get caught dead with for the next few years.
It looks like silly fun, but as they say on their own page, they don’t recommend it as a daily driver, specifically because it was designed with humor in mind, not maintainability.
Could be worth spinning up in a VM or giving away on an old laptop, though…
or messing around with for fun! (I’d break the os, and reinstall mint probably)
Peak
Reserved for .blahaj
Qubes OS
I’m currently running KDE Linux and I must admit I like it ! The immutable system feels weird but kinda safe. But the lack of Midnight Commander is a shame ! And I guess the not working transparency in yakuake is due to it being coded for X11.
I thought KDE was a DE, not a distro? (I’m definitely wrong and offending someone, aren’t I?)
They are launching an immutable distro, it just got released in beta. Still new stuff. But it being based on the latest and greatest of KDE, I was automatically attracted.
“Some people say Ubuntu is for beginners because they like to feel superior. I also say Ubuntu is for beginners because I like to feel superior” - Programmers Are Human
Emacs
Don’t forget GrapheneOS and Jellyfin! Anything else you can think of? It’ll be a lot easier if they can convert everything in one go.
I plan on using mint for a while to adjust, and as a daily, and trying to install arch for the 546782376th time (I haven’t tried to install yet) when I’m bored
Mint’s good for my purposes
One thing to note is more often people here reply with genuine comments and in good faith. There is also a lack of clever snarky comments and baiting due to the lack of karma system.
And the lack of karma also leads to more comments, as well. I liken lemmy to what the internet used to be like, where conversations among strangers happened regularly. It’s very rewarding and wholesome. Definitely not the “antisocial media” that reddit prides itself on.
Isn’t the up / downvote just like karma?
Karma on reddit tracks the accumulated likes and dislikes a user has gotten on all of their posts. Lemmy does not have a number like that.
Edit: What this means in practice is that on Reddit there are some users who make a lot of low-effort posts to get that karma number to go up and get a sense of accomplishment from that (even when they get a negative reputation among the other users), whereas on Lemmy that’s not really a thing. Lemmy has power-users that become well-known, but they’re more well-liked because they aim to gain actual reputation instead of just farming a karma number.
We could talli up our points but I much prefer comments under my posts the little number go up dopamine
Yes, but there’s no gating based on it so it doesn’t mean anything and you can turn it off.
I do snark for the art, and will live and die by it.
I couldn’t resist

This was the first thing that threw me off: people here tend to comment in good faith. I’m so used to people begging the question and generally having iron clad closed minds…from Reddit.
…but here conservations have often come to conclusion where I and another user agree to disagree amicably, or one of us moves towards the other in light of new information or a logical argument.
it’s really weird…but I hope it stays like that so I can get used to it.
🧐
I mean, yes and no. Most of the userbase is that way. But there are some users (and instances) that tend to be massive pains in the ass. So build and curate your blocklist too.
No they don’t. You’re lying and you know you’re lying. You’re just trying to suck up to the thread so you can get more karma. No one at Lemmy does that.
“lOok aT Me, i kNoW leMmY eTiQueTte. More oFteN PeoPle heRe rEply wiTH gEnuIne ComMenTs aNd In gOOd fAiTh.” You’re so full of it. Watch this, my comment will recieve more upvotes than you
bro forgot to add the /s
receive*
Right, that’s what I meant (BTW, I’m being sarcastic so I don’t mean it)
I’m sorry, but even knowing that it’s sarcastic, it comes off very snarky (it’s ok though)
Right, sorry. But still though, hope you like lemmy
A major difference I noticed with Lemmy from my time on Reddit is communities aren’t quite as rabid about strict adherence to their topic or gimmick. r/whatisthisthing banned me for seven days once for elaborating what an E6B flight computer is for. Because “This community is for IDENTIFYING the thing, not DISCUSSING the thing!” Not…so much of that around here.
Mostly the same. There are some differences you’ll figure out as you go but my favorite is that there is no Karma. I like that people aren’t posting to “win”.
There is some debate over how upvotes and downvotes should be used since it’s not for Karma, but honestly it’s not that big of a deal. Upvotes will make it easier for other people to find the post. Downvotes make it harder. That’s it, more or less.
Welcome home!
No need to show off. Don’t be a snarky asshole. Be nice to people, but be real. Don’t be afraid to be weird or answer with an autistic essay. It’s okay to dissent, just don’t be a fucking asshole about it. Realize that on Reddit, that shit is all bots and Nazi trolls and meek confirming bitches afraid to be real and tell shitty people that they’re wrong and exactly why. Welcome. Prepare to have your eyes ripped open.
Post frequently. Comment frequently. Make some friends/acquaintances. Try to remember that the folks making posts and comments are generally human (more so than on reddit). Try to be kind. Don’t pay too much mind to inter-instance drama unless it’s in a light-hearted and fun way (it’s simply not worth it otherwise), or has a real impact on your experience (in which case use the blocking tools). If someone named Nicole PMs you ignore it and maybe let your instance’s admin team know.
I’ve been here for two years now. It’s generally a great group and I’m happy I joined the API-ocolypse migration from reddit. Welcome! :)

“Like a blindman at an orgy, I was going to have to feel my way through”
Fair, I just like to check these things so I don’t offend anyone or do anything mean. Thanks. Have a great day!
I was making light of your question … partly to have a bit of fun … and partly to show that the community enjoys sharing these silly little bits of movie quotes that act like memes. The one I was using is from the movie “The Naked Gun” (the original film from 1988 with Leslie Nielson)
A lot of the meme communities enjoy old slapstick movie content as there is a lot of memeable content there … films like ‘The Naked Gun’ series, Hot Shots, any of the Mel Brooks films and Monty Python.
Don’t be afraid to test your boundaries, comment as you like but with an open mind and kind heart … people will let you know if you’ve said or implied anything negative or positive. Don’t be discouraged if you get no response either … it’s not a popularity contest. The longer you stay, the more you comment, the more you get to know people and the more they get to know you and eventually you become a regular part of the community.
Welcome to Lemmy and welcome to the fediverse.
Thanks, and I’ve seen Monty Python and the holy grail and flying circus! Very silly and memeable lol. Have a great day!
It sounds like you’ll fit right in … great to have you here … have fun!
“Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to keep on my toes”
“I’m sure we can handle this situation maturely, just like the responsible adults that we are. Isn’t that right, Mr. Poopy Pants?”
Nice beaver.
I had it stuffed
It’s smaller, but more personable. It’s full of neurodivergent, queer, and tech oriented people. It has its own inside jokes—you will want to read up on beans.
Overall, I have enjoyed the experience. Sometimes, I have been surprised when people can’t detect obvious jokes or sarcasm, but then I remember how many people here are neurodivergent and try to reply with something kind and straightforward so we’re on the same page.
People tend to be very leftist compared to the rest of the internet, so it’s good to remember that the opinions here are not always representative of the world at large.
A huge chunk of Lemmy is German, and that part of the community remains a total mystery to me because I don’t speak German. They seem cool from afar.
Which communities you are able to see depends pretty heavily on which instance is your home base—I’m with DB0, and we federate with pretty much everyone who isn’t doing something detestably illegal, but LemmyWorld is much more exclusive with who they federate with, so their users don’t see the same instances that I do. Pick a home instance that fits you best because it will matter a lot as you find communities.
You will see interactions between communists and anarchists. Try to remember that you don’t have to comment on everything you might disagree with.
Welcome to the Fediverse—we’re happy to have you.
Thanks, have a great day! :D
I have more excuses to learn German piling up lol (I have a German friend… 2 actually, and also this platform. I wanna learn something that seems interesting to me)
Also I have diverged neurons (joke, I mean I’m nd) I’m AuDHD.
Please don’t treat too different just because I’m nd yall (I’ve had bad experiences with ableism, long story)
Anyways thanks again :D
Wait a minute… I’ve seen you before… forgot where on here though.
Speaking of federation, do you know if there is a site that compares federation from instances. It would be nice to make a good decision before creating an account. Like I am on lemmy.ca and have no idea what you may see that i don’t. Personally I feel like lemmy.ca is good but have no comparison point other than lemmy.world I used a little.
And for OP if you browse on mobile I tried a lot of apps and settled on “Summit”. It’s great and stable.
I’m on laptop, but thanks anyways! Have a great day :D
There used to be this website, but the url just loads up a scam site now (I’ve created this issue on the project’s tracker if anyone has additional info to contribute).
I don’t know how technical you are, @[email protected] , but you could try running the “defed-investigator” project locally.
Please do not drag the same tired jokes over from reddit (e.g. broken arms). Stick around long enough to learn Lemmy’s tired jokes.
(I don’t know the broken arms one) I will try to learn the lemmy jokes :)
Have a great day :D nice username
Beans, how not to poop for 5 days, ed Sheeran, and I use arch btw? I’m sure I missed a bunch, too.
How not to poop for 5 days was the first fediverse legend I got to personally witness, good times
Jeans
Don’t forget moths!
And Stör!
The 1 day blinding stew is good too. Also pondering orbs.
Make sure to brush up on your fern reproduction cycle as well
You mean we could have seen these memes before?
It’s impossible to know
AI generated videos of presidentential candidates playing minecraft.
How often would you like to hear about Beef Stroganoff?
And no subreddits as hashtags. Oh how I hated that shit so much. I hated awards too, cluttered up discussions with bullshit award speeches. It’s so much cleaner discussing here.
every time literally any subreddit is mentioned:
r/subsifellfor r/subsithoughtifellfor r/birthofasub r/substakenliterally
The narwhal bacons at midnight.
I’ll fucking bake your narwhal in a microwave at midnight, son
As someone who doesn’t know the joke, fucking hilarious out of context
Le Epic bacon post, good sir!
So when I came here from Reddit I didn’t know what to pick, so I picked .world figuring it would be bigger or something. Over time it seems like people are saying that .ml is just horrible. I actually thought that .ml stood for militant full of right wing tankies ( don’t know the exact definition of that either). Lately someone essentially berated me for being on the worst one. Just now, I went to the little pull out on the side to see how to change it and what the options were and didn’t even see how to do that.
Bottom line, I have no clue how any of this works. I just wanted to see some interesting content, news from a different perspective, some fun memes, and some cool comments. I don’t even understand what fediverse means other than it’s kind of like borg technology, meaning that the information is spread across a bunch of servers instead of a single point of failure.
Maybe one day I’ll look into all of this, but seriously I have a life. As long as I open it and get what I want, I’m good. I almost never post because they are almost always removed for violating some rule. The last time I posted a question on a Linux forum and was getting some really good answers only to have it removed for violating a rule I didn’t even understand. LOL.
Good luck to you.
No ads disturb on here so reddit is worse.
Don’t do shit like “lemmy etiquette”. Just follow human etiquette and be a pleasant human and everything will be fine.
Also stop worrying so much about “doing anything bad”. Sometimes you fuck up, sometimes you upset people, it’s no big deal. You’re good.
